Eleven Year Old Female Therapy Experience

Note: Cerebral Palsy patients often take trips to comprehensive centres that have a variety of therapies for 2 to 4 week intense sessions of when the parents are on holiday from work. The cost of the entire therapy journey including flights and stay is normally considerably less expensive than getting this many treatments locally and parents of cerebral palsy patients often see an acceleration of improvements for their children after.

Situation

From birth, the patient has encountered a lot of challenges with many of the issues caused during the delivery. Her family provided some details of the patient’s situation for the therapy centre before they gave a treatment protocol.

    1. The placenta detached prematurely which often is the cause for some cerebral palsy related symptoms.
    2. There was a need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation indicating that the baby needed support for breathing and to get her heart started again.
    3. There was a deficiency of red blood cells after birth which is called neonatal anemia.
    4. The baby had an intraventricular haemorrhage which is bleeding inside the brain’s ventricular system which may account for neurological issues.
    5. She had cystic periventricular leukomalacia which involves the death of small sections of brain tissue around the ventricles.
    6. She also had a right-wing tetraspastic cerebral movement disorder which is a description of the type of cerebral palsy and it affects all four limbs which increases the muscle tone (spasticity) on her body’s right side.

The patient has faced lots of challenges since she was born. People with cerebral palsy have difficulties moving, maintaining balance, and maintaining their posture. In most cases, it occurs before birth when the developing brain is damaged. During and after her birth, the patient suffered a variety of complications.

Even with this challenging start to her life, the patient’s parents characterize her as intelligent, happy and talkative.

Observed Changes After Therapy Sessions

The parents observed the following changes after the therapy sessions were done:

  1. Better ability to control her body and neck
  2. More control over her the muscles in her mouth leading to better eating
  3. Increased speed in movements
  4. Greater strength in her legs leading to increased mobility

The parents were encouraged by these improvements leading them to plan another trip for therapy sessions.
